Instructions from UIDAI regarding ‘Aadhaar Card’ as an identity document for NRIs/PIOs/OCI cardholders abroad

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has issued the following instructions regarding ‘Aadhaar Card’ as an identity document for NRIs/PIOs/OCI cardholders abroad: 

  1. a)     Aadhaar as an identity document may be sought only from those who are eligible for it as per the Aadhaar Act, 2016 and
  2. b)     Most of NRIs/PIOs/OCIs may not be eligible for Aadhaar enrolment as per Aadhaar Act, 2016. 

UIDAI has also drawn attention to Section 7 of the Aadhaar Act which, inter-alia, provides that “if an Aadhaar number is not assigned to an individual, the individual shall be offered alternate and viable means of identification for delivery of subsidy, benefits or service”.
